Top 5 most memorable red carpet moments

Of all the rugs out there, the red carpet has to be the most iconic. Over the years, red carpets have welcomed the great and good into awards ceremonies, galas and special events. And although most of the arrivals have gone without a hitch, there are some that stand out for all the wrong reasons.

  1. When Björkdressed up as a swan

In 2001 Björk caused a sensation when she turned up on the Academy Awards red carpet dressed as a swan. The white fluffy outfit came complete with a fake swan head which lolled casually around the Icelandic songstress’ neck. Created by designer Marjan Pejoski, the dress reflected Björk’s fascination with swans – she even imitated the laying of an egg as she made her way up the red carpet.

  1. When Sacha Baron Cohen showered Ryan Seacrest with the (fake) ashes of King Jong Il

In order to promote his 2012 film, The Dictator, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen headed to the Oscar’s red carpet in full military get up. With a sexy military assistant on each arm, and an urn in hand, he made his way up the red carpet to be interviewed by Ryan Seacrest. After explaining that it was Kim Jong Il’s dream to attend the Oscars, he proceeded to open the urn and pour its contents all over the unfortunate interviewer.

  1. When Amy Schumer threw herself at the feet of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

When comedian Amy Schumer saw Kim Kardashian and Kanye West getting all of the attention at the Time 100 ceremony in 2015, she decided to take extreme action. After pretending to trip and fall to the floor in front of Kim and Kanye, the actress proceeded to crawl at their stylishly dressed feet. Although many of those nearby found the prank funny, Kim and Kanye didn’t even crack a smile, instead, they walked off in stony silence.

  1. When the creators of South Park turned up in drag

In 2000, South Park creator Trey Parker was nominated in the Best Song category for his ‘Blame Canada’ composition. The animator brought friend Matt Stone along as his date and they both decided that, instead of renting a tuxedo for the evening, they’d dress in drag. While Matt dressed as Gwyneth Paltrow in the pink Ralph Lauren dress she wore to the 1999 Oscars, Trey took inspiration from the infamous Versace gown Jennifer Lopez wore to the Grammy’s in 2000.

  1. When Lady Gaga wore a dress made of meat

Over the years, a number of very memorable dresses have graced the world’s red carpets. However few stand out as clearly as the gory gown worn by Lady Gaga to the VMAs in 2010. Complete with a raw meat headpiece and shoes laced with butcher’s twine, the outfit has to be one of the most unique and controversial ever created.
